HYDERABAD: Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) has expressed concern over the conversion of green land in the Sindh province into colonies, which is putting the agricultural land resources in danger. Dr. Fateh Marri, Vice Chancellor of SAU, warned that this situation will lead to problems for food security.
Speaking at the Post-Conference Award Ceremony of the First International Conference on “Biodiversity of Arid Zone,” hosted by Sub-Campus Umerkot at the Rest House Hall of the University in Hyderabad, Dr. Marri emphasized that 50 percent of the land resources of the province are arid areas, and therefore, there is a need to start arid agriculture.
Dr. Marri stressed that agriculture plays a vital role in the country’s economy, prosperity, and development. He stated that more investment in agriculture, innovation, and proper utilization of resources can help the growth of the agriculture industry and tackle all the problems. According to Dr. Marri, about 50 percent of the land resources of the province can be developed through modern agricultural technology to promote arid agriculture.
Dr. Marri also highlighted that while there has been significant progress in arid agriculture worldwide, Pakistan still depends on canal agriculture. However, climate change, disasters, water scarcity, floods, droughts, salinity in underground water, and other problems have made it difficult to meet the target of increased production. As a result, Pakistan has to import certified seeds, edible oil, and many food items.
Dr. Marri stated that SAU will promote arid agriculture through its experts from Sub Campus Umerkot. He also said that with the cooperation of different institutions and the private sector, SAU will conduct research on hydroponic agriculture production, livestock, organic agriculture, vegetables, fruits, and medicinal plants.
Dr. Marri expressed hope that this international conference would be a milestone towards making the land resources of farmers and settlers useful. He concluded by stating that through arid agriculture, SAU aims to tackle food insecurity, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and contribute to the country’s overall development.
