Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman claims that registering Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) will prevent internet shutdowns in Pakistan.
He stated this during a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications regarding the current VPN situation.
The chairman mentioned that PTA had already registered 25,000 VPNs under a policy introduced in 2016.
However, committee members questioned whether PTA truly understands VPN technology, as VPNs enable access to social media despite not being social media themselves.
The chairman attributed internet shutdowns to security operations in areas like Balochistan. He assured that registering VPNs would reduce all internet issues for businesses in Pakistan.
The chairman also compared Pakistan’s VPN policies to those in Gulf countries, China, and Turkey, highlighting the need for broader regulatory plans.
Several senators expressed determination to take this matter to the Prime Minister. According to the PTA chairman, registered VPNs are the solution to resolving internet shutdown issues for users.
