Producing electricity from coal, good or bad?”

Sheeraz Sattar by Sheeraz Sattar
February 16, 2023

Pakistan has been facing a severe economic crisis due to a lack of foreign exchange reserves. In this regard, the government of Pakistan has made a good decision to quadruple local coal capacity to reduce the cost of power generation and to refrain from installing gas-fired power plants in the coming years. This move is expected to benefit the country’s economy in several ways, including reduced reliance on expensive imported fuels, improved energy security, and increased access to affordable electricity for the general public.

One of the significant benefits of this decision is the reduction in Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuels, especially expensive natural gas. The country has been struggling to manage its foreign exchange reserves, with imports of natural gas and petroleum products accounting for a significant portion of its import bill. By increasing the use of locally available coal, Pakistan can significantly reduce its import bill, thereby preserving its foreign exchange reserves. This, in turn, will help the country to better manage its balance of payments, which is crucial for ensuring economic stability and growth.

Another advantage of this decision is that it will improve Pakistan’s energy security. The country has faced severe power shortages in the past due to a lack of domestic energy resources and an over-reliance on imported fuels. By increasing its domestic coal capacity, Pakistan can reduce its dependence on imported natural gas and petroleum products, thereby improving its energy security. Additionally, Pakistan’s coal reserves are abundant and can provide a reliable source of energy for the country in the long run.

Furthermore, this decision will help to provide affordable electricity to the general public, which is essential for socio-economic development. The high cost of electricity has been a significant challenge for the people of Pakistan, especially for low-income households. By reducing the cost of power generation through increased coal capacity, the government can ensure that electricity remains affordable and accessible to all. This will not only benefit the general public but also help to boost industrial and economic growth, as businesses can operate more efficiently with a reliable and affordable source of electricity.

Pakistan’s decision to quadruple local coal capacity to reduce the cost of power generation and refrain from installing gas-fired power plants is a good move for the country’s economy. It will reduce reliance on expensive imported fuels, improve energy security, and increase access to affordable electricity for the general public. However, it is essential for the government to ensure that the increased use of coal does not harm the environment and cause health hazards for the people. The government must take necessary steps to ensure that the coal-based power generation is done in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
