A tense atmosphere prevailed in the Senate on Monday as Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senators staged a walkout, tearing up copies of the session’s agenda despite repeated appeals from PML-N lawmakers to maintain decorum.

According to details, PML-N Senators Anusha Rehman, Afnan Ullah, and Amir Chishti attempted to pacify the PPP members but failed to prevent the walkout.

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also urged both coalition partners — the PPP and PML-N — to resolve their differences amicably.

During the session, PTI Senator Ali Zafar took the floor and criticised the ruling parties, accusing them of pursuing personal interests instead of public welfare.

He said both the PPP and PML-N had failed to take meaningful measures to provide relief to flood victims, many of whom were “facing hunger and extreme poverty” while lawmakers “enjoyed perks and privileges.”

The PTI Senator further pointed out that Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) had been shut down and wheat stocks depleted, warning of looming food insecurity.

He urged the government to announce subsidies on seeds and fertilizers, repair damaged dams, and establish mobile clinics in flood-hit areas to assist victims.

As Senator Zafar continued his address, PML-N lawmakers launched a protest demonstration in response to his remarks.

Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar later raised questions regarding the performance of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, shifting focus to the province’s handling of disaster management and relief efforts.
