The post-mortem report into the death of Maryam Bibi, who was allegedly tortured by a police officer on the Millat Express, revealed that the woman’s demise was caused by her falling off the train.
The copy of the post-mortem report received by different media outlets stated that the injuries on the woman’s body were due to her falling off the train, and her death occurred mainly due to excessive bleeding after she hit her head on the ground.
The post-mortem report and other evidence have been provided to the investigative team, which is probing the incident from all angles, including suicide.
A three-member committee, led by DIG Railways Police, had been formed yesterday to probe the death of the woman after her body was found in Bahawalpur. The committee will submit its report to the Railways Chairman within three days.
Maryam Bibi, 29, was traveling to Faisalabad from Karachi before Eid when witnesses said she started throwing away goods of other passengers. They called in a police constable and protested her behavior, which led to the cop torturing the woman severely in front of everyone.
Police said on Monday that the body of the woman, who was subjected to torture by policeman Mir Hasan on a moving train, was found near Chani Goth Railway Station in Bahawalpur.
Fellow passengers said she jumped out of the train and died. The incident happened about a week ago.
The policeman was arrested last week after the video went viral, in which he could be seen holding the woman by her hair and hitting her multiple times while other passengers watched silently.
However, a local court in Hyderabad approved the cop’s bail on the same day against a surety bond of Rs 35,000.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Railways Abdullah Sheikh had said that the incident took place on April 7 on the Karachi to Lala Musa-bound Millat Express. However, just a day after the cop was released on bail, the woman’s body was found in Bahawalpur.
According to the police, the railway police officer took the woman, who belonged to Jaranwala’s Chak 40 Morr, Faisalabad, with him after violently beating her on April 7.
The victim’s brother, Afzal, said that his sister used to work at a beauty parlor in Karachi and she was coming to Jaranwala to celebrate Eid ul Fitr. Afzal also demanded that the death of his sister should be investigated.
