ISLAMABAD: A petition has been filed in the Islamabad High Court over the freedom of media in the country.
IHC Chief Justice Athar Manullah conducted the hearing in which the petitioner held the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) chairman, and the federal government responded in the plea.
The petition was filed by the opposition for public interest under Article 199 of the Constitution of Pakistan where the petitioner stated that freedom of expression and access to information was part of the constitution.
Arguing, Jahangir Jadon Advocate said that Article 17 of the Constitution has given the freedom to the media, while the media was the fourth pillar of the state and the basis of the government of the free people is freedom of expression.
Chief Justice Athar Manullah during the hearing asked why you made the NAB chairman a party. The court directed the prosecution to remove NAB from the list, saying that it should not set aside a matter not belonging to this court.
Later, the IHC directed the amendment of the petition and directed the Registrar’s Office that the amended application be set for hearing the next day.
