Prestigious Time Magazine has honored Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza by including him in “The 100 Most Influential People Of 2024” for his altruistic dedication to documenting the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Recognizing Azaiza in the “Icons” segment, the magazine commended him for serving as the world’s “eyes and ears,” offering invaluable insights into the realities within the besieged region for 108 days, amidst restrictions preventing international journalists from accessing the conflict zone imposed by Israel.
“With a camera slung over his shoulder and a flak jacket emblazoned with ‘PRESS,’ the 25-year-old Palestinian photographer tirelessly captured life under Israeli bombardment for nearly four months: families displaced, women grieving, individuals trapped beneath the rubble,” Time remarked.
In response to Time’s acknowledgment, Azaiza expressed gratitude, feeling honored to represent his homeland wherever he went or whatever he achieved.
“To those who deny Palestine’s statehood or lay claim to our land, Palestine will one day be liberated from Zionist occupation. Each of us plays a role, and my mission is far from over,” he conveyed on his social media platform.
With 18.2 million followers on Instagram and approximately 1.1 million on X, Azaiza’s influence extends far and wide.
Time Magazine noted Azaiza’s courageous reporting from hazardous zones, underlining the grave risks journalists face, citing over 95 journalist fatalities at the hands of Israeli forces since October 7, marking the deadliest period for press freedom since 1992, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Numerous other media personnel have been injured or detained by Israeli authorities in Gaza.
