ISLAMABAD: Following their win over Sri Lanka in last week’s Galle Test, Pakistan climbed to the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said, with arch-rivals India trailing close behind at number two.
The World Test Championship is a two-year competition that sees an undisputed World Test champion crowned at the end of a league campaign and a showpiece decider. The league’s format sees each team playing three home and three away series to determine the qualifiers for the WTC Final.
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam’s side beat Sri Lanka at their home turf in Galle last week after batter Saud Shakeel scored an impressive double-century. The green shirts have fared well in the second Test at Colombo as well, dismissing Sri Lanka for 166 as spinner Abrar Ahmed and Naseem Shah took seven wickets among themselves.
India, on the other hand, were held to a draw by the West Indies after rain washed out play during Day 5 of the second Test match in the Caribbean, meaning Pakistan got the lead on points to top the charts.
“Pakistan sit alone at the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings after fellow pacesetter India was held to a draw in the second Test against the West Indies in Trinidad,” the ICC said in a report on its website.
