Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson netted twice, and Miguel Almiron scored a sensational second-half strike as the fourth-placed Magpies thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday, meanwhile, Tottenham showed its resolve to fight back from two goals down against Bournemouth to win it 3-2.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez suffered a head injury in the 18th minute from a knee strike from a teammate, Tyrone Mings, and had to be replaced by Robin Olsen 17 minutes later.
Six minutes into the first half’s extra time, World Cup hopeful Wilson converted from the spot after Villa defender Ashley Young used his arm to stop a Miguel Almiron shot in front of England manager Gareth Southgate.
The Newcastle striker doubled his side’s lead when he headed home from close range, with Joelinton and the in-form Almiron wrapping up a fifth win in six games for Eddie Howe’s side, who were denied a move up to third place in the table by Tottenham’s late winner at Bournemouth.
Antonio Conte’s side were staring at a third successive Premier League defeat after Kieffer Moore’s well-taken brace but second-half-goals by Ryan Sessegnon, Ben Davies and Bentancur kept them in third place.
With one eye on next week’s vital Champions League clash away in Marseille, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte made several changes to his side and Bournemouth took full advantage.
Moore finished off a flowing move in the 22nd minute when he curled a low shot past Hugo Lloris after a ball in from the right wing by Marcus Tavernier.
Moore then added a second shortly after halftime with a header from Adam Smith’s cross.
Sessegnon was about to be substituted when he popped up to fire home left-footed in the 57th minute and then Davies powered a header in from a corner in the 73rd minute.
Tottenham piled on the pressure and were rewarded in stoppage time when Bentancur, on as a substitute, fired in after a corner was not cleared by the Bournemouth defense.
Tottenham stayed in third place with 26 points from 13 games with Bournemouth on 13 points.
