Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said that the current government will complete its constitutional term, while calling for independent third-party audits to evaluate the performance of all federal ministries.

He maintained that the existing governance system has lost its ability to resolve the country’s problems and requires fundamental reforms.

Speaking to journalists in Islamabad, Naqvi said the current system was not going anywhere and that the prime minister would complete his constitutional tenure under all circumstances. He added that the government would fulfil its responsibilities until the end of its term.

The interior minister stressed that the performance of all ministries should be assessed through an impartial review and independent third-party audits.

He said he was also accountable to the prime minister for the performance of his own ministry and therefore believed that the Interior Ministry should likewise undergo a third-party audit.

Naqvi said the audit findings should be made public so that citizens could clearly see how effectively each ministry was carrying out its responsibilities. He also noted that his attendance at cabinet meetings had been around 70 per cent.

He acknowledged that questions were being raised about his performance as a minister, arguing that this made transparent and impartial evaluations of every ministry all the more necessary.

Naqvi said Pakistan’s governance system, which has been in place for the past 80 years, had failed. He argued that if the system had been effective, the country would have made much greater progress by now. According to him, temporary measures would not solve Pakistan’s problems, and only comprehensive structural reforms could bring lasting improvement.

He reiterated his support for democracy, saying the government would complete its constitutional term. At the same time, he said all political forces would have to work together to improve the country’s governance system.
