A 20-year-old woman was killed and 11 others, including women and children, were injured when a speeding SUV crashed into a Suzuki pickup near the Shahrah-e-Bhutto toll plaza in Karachi’s Korangi area on Wednesday, causing the pickup to overturn.
According to police and rescue officials, the pickup was travelling from Qayyumabad to Quaidabad when it was struck from behind by the speeding vehicle. The force of the collision overturned the pickup, leaving its passengers injured.
The car’s driver fled the scene after the collision. Police have impounded both vehicles and shifted them to the police station.
Rescue teams shifted the victims to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). Edhi officials identified the deceased as 20-year-old Rameen, daughter of Lalu.
The injured were identified as Hina, 8; Asha, 12; Kashi, 13; Dhani, 16; Shamo, 25; Ashu, 30; Kashi, 37; Lakshmi, 40; Tulsia, 45; and Lalu, 57. The identity of another critically injured woman, believed to be around 50 years old, could not be immediately confirmed.
Efforts are underway to locate the absconding driver, while further investigation is ongoing.
