KARACHI: Pakistan People Party (PPP) leader Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday assumed his responsibilities as Mayor of Karachi.
Wahab arrived at Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) building to assume his duties. On the occasion, preparation were made to welcome the new mayor as staff raised slogans in his favour and presented flower garlands.
Earlier Mayor of Karachi Murtaza Wahab paid his respects to the founder of the nation at Mazar-e-Quaid along with his deputy Salman Murad and PPP’s Town chairmen and UC chairmen.
Speaking to media on the occasion, he vowed to serve the city without any discrimination and promised to bring back the past glory of Karachi. He said PPP workers will serve every nook and corner of the city.
Murtaza Wahab called the citizens to extend support to the noble works of the PPP and correct on any shortcoming. He thanked the people for reposing confidence on the party.
He said the party leadership has decided to response the criticism with performance and is no looking forward to shun hatred and serve the city. He added that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has directed them to work without any discrimination. He vowed to provide a roadmap for the city’s development.
A day earlier. Murtaza Wahab and Salman Murad took oath as mayor and deputy mayor of Karachi at a ceremony held at Polo Ground. Wahab was given the key to the city of Karachi.
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by PPP Chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, members of his cabinet, former chief minister Qaim Ali Shah, members of civil society and diplomats. The mayor and deputy mayor were sworn in by Sindh Election Commission Ejaz Anwar Chauhan.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Wahab vowed to serve the city without any discrimination. He thanked the PPP chairman, former president Asif Ali Zardari, and Faryal Talpur and others for giving him an opportunity to serve the city.
Wahab said that residents of Karachi had reposed confidence in the PPP and the party would come up to their expectation. He said the municipal administration would bring the politics of hatred and division to an end.
He said that all union committee chairmen, vice-chairmen and local government representatives belonging to the PPP would play their due role to accomplish the mission of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
Wahab and Salman Murad won the mayoral elections on June 15 with the support of the PML-N and JUI-Fazl. Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman was placed second.
