LAHORE: The Punjab government has banned pillion riding for 9th and 10th Muharram (25 and 26 June) in order to maintain law and order all over the province.
According to the notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, the decision to impose section 144 was made to insure public safety and security.
The notification stated that there are high chance that miscreants, anti-social elements and violent groups may fuel sectarianism during Muharram.
The notification further stated that carrying weapons in public places, raising provocative slogans, and displaying any signs or symbols that could incite public emotions will also be prohibited.
A complete ban has also been imposed on the circulation of content through social and digital media aimed at spreading sectarian hatred.
In addition, the construction of fortified positions (morchas) on rooftops along procession routes, as well as sitting or standing on the roofs of houses and buildings on both sides of the routes, has been strictly prohibited.
However, the restriction on pillion riding will not apply to women, children, the elderly, law enforcement personnel in uniform, and journalists.
Police have been directed to register cases under Section 188 against those found violating the orders.
