This year, thank to the recent monsoon rains, the kharif crops (monsoon crops or autumn crops) prospects has improved, and farmers hoping for a good crop yield.
Heavy rains have remedied the water shortage for cotton, paddy, sugarcane and maize cultivation, and provided the required amount of water for Kharif season.
Ministry of National Food Security and Research said 40 per cent less water was available for kharif crops between May and June.
Muhammad Ali Talpur, vice-president of the Central Cotton Committee of the government of Pakistan, said that due to the ongoing rains, cotton production in Punjab and Sindh is expected to increase to 9.5 million to 10 million bales. But in case of too much rain, it could be detrimental to the cotton crop. Pakistan generally produces more sugarcane and rice than it needs.
According to Muhammad Ali Talpur, the country produces 9.8 million tons of rice and 7.8 million tons of sugarcane.
