Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation honours Indian PM

PM Modi truns 72 as wishes pour in for his birthday
New Delhi: “Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with yet another award, this time it’s by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for the PM’s ambitious pet project, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan( Clean India Mission),” stated by an Indian news source.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is a private charity organization owned by billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates. He will receive the award during his visit to the United States later this month.

Social and political activists have criticized the decision of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to confer the award to the “Butcher of Gujarat”

Politicians, lawyers, and human right activists have urged the foundation not to confer the award to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for violating human rights in Kashmir and Assam.

“While public health is undoubtedly a priority in India and around the world, such an honor would come as his Hindu nationalist party has incited violence against minorities, silenced dissent and curtailed freedom of expression,” Suchitra Vijayan, a lawyer and executive director of the Polis Project, and Arjun Singh Sethi, a human rights lawyer and adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center wrote in an article published in The Washington Post on Saturday.
