ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is reported to have launched an investigation about human trafficking after reports that more than 28 Pakistanis along with dozens other died when a wooden sailing boat carrying migrants to Europe crashed against rocks near the southern Italian coast early on Sunday.

The vessel, which sailed from Turkey and was carrying people from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and several other countries, sank in rough seas before dawn near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort on the eastern coast of Calabria.

In a statement released the other day, FIA said teams have been formed to investigate the matter and arrest the traffickers who had illegally sent the victims.
The agency has also started contacting heirs of the deceased, most of whom hailed from Punjab’s Gujrat district.
