The price of LPG has unofficially increased by Rs20 per kilogram, as reported by a private TV channel on Tuesday.
According to the channel, the LPG mafia in Punjab independently raised the price by Rs20 per kg, surpassing the official rates just before the commencement of the month of Ramadan.
Irfan Khokhar, Chairman of the LPG Distributors Association, has called on the newly elected government to take stringent action against the LPG mafia. He emphasized that while the government’s Ramadan relief package has not yet begun, the LPG mafia has hiked the gas prices, putting an additional burden on the public.
It is worth mentioning that the federal government has announced a Ramadan relief package of over Rs. 7 billion, offering basic items at reduced rates in utility stores. However, wheat flour, sugar, and ghee are not included in the package.
As a common practice in Pakistan, different mafias tend to increase the rates of essential commodities before the start of Ramadan each year, taking advantage of the government’s limited control over prices.
