Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit has officially made her high-stakes return to the digital screen today, December 19, with the release of the psychological crime thriller Mrs. Deshpande. However, fans in Pakistan are facing disappointment as the series remains inaccessible due to platform restrictions.
The ‘JioHotstar’ Barrier
The six-episode series is streaming exclusively on JioHotstar, the newly merged entity of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. Because the platform does not officially operate in Pakistan and enforces strict geo-blocking, local viewers cannot stream the content through standard means.
Unlike Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, which have a global footprint, JioHotstar requires an Indian mobile number and local payment methods for access.
For those following the buzz, Mrs. Deshpande is a gritty departure from Madhuri’s usual roles:
An Indian adaptation of the French hit La Mante, the story follows a convicted serial killer (Madhuri) who is brought out of prison to help police catch a copycat murderer.
She agrees to assist only if she can work alongside her estranged son, a police officer.
The series is helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor.
This marks Madhuri’s return to streaming after a three-year hiatus following her 2022 hit The Fame Game.
Despite her massive popularity in Pakistan fresh off her appearance in the box-office success Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, her latest venture remains out of reach for her local fanbase.
Will it come to Pakistan?
Currently, there are no reports of the series being licensed to international platforms like Netflix or YouTube for the Pakistani territory.
Unless a secondary distribution deal is signed, the “Dhak-Dhak” girl’s transition into this dark, complex role will remain behind a digital wall for viewers in Pakistan.
