PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has drafted an amendment bill to prevent child abuse, which proposes the death penalty or life imprisonment for child abuse.
Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has directed to present the Child Protection Amendment Bill in the cabinet meeting. The amendment bill proposed video and audio recordings of those sentenced to death for child abuse.
According to the draft bill, the video recorded before the death sentence will be made public after approval. The convict sentenced to life imprisonment will remain in the prison till physical death.
The draft states that lifers will not be released on parole and that the government will not be able to pardon child molesters. According to the draft amendment bill, the accused involved in child trafficking will be sentenced to 14 to 25 years imprisonment while the record of those involved in the abuse will be registered with the Child Commission and NADRA.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection and Welfare Act, 2020, which will come into effect at once when it is passed, punishes child rapists and abusers with 14-year imprisonments and a fine extending to Rs5 million.
The bill will be presented in the assembly soon and has so far been presented to the cabinet. The bill includes punishments for “dealing with organs of a child, child pornography, exposure to seduction and child trafficking”.
