KARACHI: Local vendors of Karachi are protesting against the alleged extortion of Deputy Director Estate Akmal Dar at Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).
According to details, local vendors of Liaquatabad supermarket are engaged in a protest against the alleged extortion and incompetence of Deputy Director Estate Akmal Dar. Akmal Dar is also accused of embezzling billions of rupees.
Earlier, it was revealed that almost 40 illegal shops were built, which were later demolished, in the vacant office of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) situated in the building.
It was further revealed that the illegal shops were allegedly built by the Deputy Director, Assistant Director and Inspectors of the State Department. Relevant sources informed that the affected shopkeepers had also lodged complaints against the Deputy Director Estate but has been taken yet.
The vendors have informed that the shops were constructed only after fulfilling all the rules and regulations of KMC, while challan amount of Rs. 40,000 per shop was paid. It is worth mentioning here that all the challans were issued with the signature of the Deputy Director Estate Akmal Dar.
“During the construction, the concerned inspectors of the metropolitan kept checking on a daily basis. If there were illegal then why the KMC officials at that time remained silent spectators?” they asked.
The vendors alleged that despite fulfilling the legal requirements, not only the shops were demolished but also their valuables including water motors and generator were taken away. “Deputy Director Akmal Dar demanded a bribe of Rs 5 million for not demolishing the shops,” they alleged.
