KARACHI: Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has recorded its highest-ever cargo handling in 138 years, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs said.
KPT surpassed its previous record by handling 54.685 million tonnes of cargo, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said.
The new benchmark is clear evidence of growth in the maritime sector, Chaudhry said. “Reforms are under way to make Pakistan a strong maritime and trade hub in the region,” he added.
The minister said efforts to modernize and expand ports have been accelerated. “Investment, logistics and improving port systems are the government’s top priority,” he said.
He commended KPT’s chairman, officers and staff for their hard work and professionalism.
KPT Chairman Admiral Shahid Ahmed said the port’s capacity, operational efficiency and management have improved significantly. “Measures to further enhance Karachi Port’s competitiveness will continue,” he said.
