A public feud between Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and actress Emma Watson has flared anew after Watson’s latest remarks on a podcast drew a fiery rebuke from the author.

Speaking on Jay Shetty’s podcast in an interview, Watson, known most for Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies, wished to be able to differentiate emotionally between her own admirations of Rowling from their strongly differing opinions on transgender rights.

“It’s my greatest hope,” she explained, “that people who don’t share my viewpoint will love me, and that I can continue to love people whom I don’t necessarily see eye to eye with.”

The interview elicited mixed responses on social media, with the backlash of LGBTQ+ supporters accusing Watson of extending “grace” to one whom they feel is actively hurting the trans community. One of the criticizing posts garnered more than 13,000 likes for reading: “That’s not grace, it is privilege.”

I’m seeing quite a bit of comment about this, so I want to make a couple of points.

I’m not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should… https://t.co/c0pz19P7jc

Rowling, who has consistently come under fire for her contentious opinions about gender identity and trans rights, hit back sharply on social media. In a lengthy statement on X (formerly Twitter), she accused Watson of privilege and naïveté, writing: “She has so little experience of real life she’s ignorant of how ignorant she is.”

Rowling also cited a spoof video ridiculing Watson’s appearance on the podcast, saying that she was “here for ALL the spoofs,” before going into a detailed analysis of the actress and other Harry Potter co-stars.

“She [Watson] and Dan [Radcliffe] have taken on the position of de facto spokespeople for the world I created,” Rowling stated, continuing that even though they are welcome to disagree with her, she also feels equally entitled to speak up.

Rowling also condemned Watson’s privileged upbringing, comparing it to her own life of poverty. “She’ll never need a homeless shelter,” Rowling stated. “Her ‘public bathroom’ is single occupancy and comes with a security man standing guard outside the door.”

The author also disclosed a past moment of sympathy from Watson, claiming the actress once passed along a handwritten note during a period of intense public backlash, which simply read: “I’m so sorry for what you’re going through.”
