ISLAMABAD: Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, has reaffirmed that Islamabad is the sole venue for talks between Tehran and Washington, saying “We only trust Pakistan” during a conference in the capital on Thursday.

Speaking at the Institute of Regional Studies on Friday morning, Ambassador Moghadam said Iranians were surprised when US Vice President J.D. Vance abruptly left the negotiating table during the Islamabad talks, adding: “They cannot make decisions without the Zionists and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.”

The ambassador’s comments came as a high-profile Pakistani delegation continued talks in Tehran. Field Marshal Asim Munir, who landed in Tehran on Wednesday, held further negotiations with Iranian leadership on Thursday amid media reports that he may next travel to Washington.

Earlier today, the White House press secretary cited President Trump as saying that Pakistan is the only mediator in the ongoing peace talks between the US and Iran, a position echoed by Iran’s envoy in Islamabad.

Diplomats observing every single developments vis-a-vis Middle East peace believe the statements by Iran’s Ambassador underscore Pakistan’s emerging role as the intermediary in efforts to open dialogue between Tehran and Washington, even as details on the scope and schedule of any trilateral meetings remain scarce.

Iranian and Pakistani officials have so far framed Islamabad as the trusted channel for communications as speculation continues over possible direct engagement between Tehran and Washington.
