Today, the International Day of the Girl Child is being observed across Pakistan and around the world, as reported by international media on Saturday.
According to details, the purpose of celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child is to highlight the need to address the challenges faced by girls around the world, to empower them, and to promote the fulfillment of their human rights.
In 1995, during the World Conference on Women held in Beijing, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was unanimously adopted by participating countries — a progressive framework that continues to advance the rights of not only women but also girls.
For the first time in history, the Beijing Declaration specifically emphasized the rights of girls. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170, declaring October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face worldwide.
The resolution acknowledges that adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life — not only during their formative years but also as they grow into mature women.
If girls are effectively supported during adolescence, they possess the potential to become empowered women, exemplary mothers, heads of households, successful entrepreneurs, and political leaders capable of transforming the world.
