Indian media cheers Trump’s failed Nobel Bid

Indian media seems to be rejoicing, or potentially happy, over Donald Trump not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

Indian media seems to be rejoicing, or potentially happy, over Donald Trump not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

The reason stems primarily from a strong and repeated disagreement with his claims of having mediated a conflict between India and Pakistan.

President Trump repeatedly and publicly asserted that he stopped a military conflict between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan in May 2025, often attributing the cessation to his personal pressure, including threats of tariffs.

However, New Delhi has consistently and categorically rejected this claim. Indian authorities, including the Prime Minister, have maintained that the ceasefire was achieved solely through direct military-to-military talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries, with no role for any third-party mediation, including the US President.

Trump’s claims are seen by India as an attempt to assert a role in a bilateral matter and undermine India’s foreign policy principle of resolving issues with Pakistan without outside intervention.

Allowing the claim to stand, and implicitly supporting a Peace Prize nomination based on it, would legitimize foreign mediation in Indo-Pak affairs, which India views as detrimental to its strategic autonomy.

Some Indian diplomatic observers viewed Trump’s open and aggressive lobbying for the Nobel and his attempts to use the India-Pakistan situation to bolster his candidacy as a form of political pressure or “bully” tactics. India has historically resisted such external pressure.

In short, a Nobel Peace Prize for Trump, partially justified by a widely disputed claim of mediating the India-Pakistan conflict, would have been seen in India as an endorsement of a factual inaccuracy and a challenge to its foreign policy independence.

In June 2025, Pakistan officially nominated Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his diplomatic role in de-escalating a crisis with India earlier that year. The nomination for the 2026 prize, rather than the 2025 prize, was made because the deadline for 2025 submissions had already passed.

So let’s see if not this year, maybe next year will be Trump’s year.
