Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of the Pakistan Army, has formally recommended former US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his purported role in defusing a potential nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan last month, according to White House spokesperson Anna Kelly.
As reported by Reuters, Ms. Kelly said on Wednesday that Mr. Trump hosted General Munir at the White House following the general’s proposal for the former President’s nomination for the prestigious international award.
“President Trump met with General Munir after the latter urged his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of his efforts to prevent a nuclear escalation in South Asia,” Ms. Kelly told the press.
Mr. Trump expressed appreciation for the nomination and the meeting, noting that their discussions also covered regional dynamics, including Iran.
He remarked that Pakistan possesses deep insights into the Iranian context. Mr. Trump further stated that he had thanked General Munir for helping to avert war with India and extended similar praise to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with whom he had spoken the previous evening.
