On Valentine’s Day 2026, filmmakers Imtiaz Ali and Ektaa Kapoor announced their reunion for Heer Ranjha, which is being shaped as the second chapter in the “Laila Majnu” universe.
Following the massive cult resurgence of the 2018 film Laila Majnu, this new project aims to retell the tragic 15th-century Punjabi folklore for a modern generation while staying true to its timeless, poetic soul.
The film will be helmed by Sajid Ali, who also directed the original Laila Majnu.
Imtiaz Ali described the film as having its own rhythm, speaking the “love language of this generation” while staying rooted in the eternal.
While rumors briefly suggested Rohit Saraf might play Ranjha, sources close to the production have clarified that casting is still ongoing and no leads have been officially locked.
The project is presented by Imtiaz Ali and produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa Kapoor, and Preety Ali under the banner of Pi Films Pvt Ltd.
Separately, Imtiaz Ali is also directing another untitled “charming story of love and longing” starring Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, and Vedang Raina, scheduled for release on June 12, 2026.
