LONDON: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering major changes to the format of the 2027 ODI World Cup and other global tournaments, according to a report by British broadcaster BBC.
The ICC is considering a proposal to reduce the number of participating teams in the 2027 World Cup to 12 from 14, the BBC reported.
Under the proposed format, a “Super Seven” stage could be introduced in the 50-over World Cup, while only two teams would qualify for the tournament proper via the qualifying stage, the report said.
The BBC said the new format is also likely to increase the number of matches in major competitions, especially between India and Pakistan.
The governing body is also considering changes to the format of the T20 World Cup, with a proposal to introduce a “Super 10” stage in place of the current “Super Eight” stage, according to the report.
In addition, a proposal to add semi-finals before the final is under consideration to make the World Test Championship (WTC) more competitive, the report added.
The ICC did not immediately comment on the report.
