KARACHI: The heavy showers on Wednesday brought routine life in metropolis to a standstill as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy to moderate showers for Thursday as well.
Earlier, the Pakistan Meteorological Department had predicted another monsoon spell from August 16-19.
The intermitted rainfall is recorded in almost all the areas of the city, including, II Chundrigar Road, Gulistan-e-Johar, North Karachi, Surjani Town, Gadap Town, National Highway, Bahria Town, Malir, Shahrah-e-Faisal and suburban areas of the city.
Gulzar-e-Hijri area of Karachi is being flooded as Tadho dam overflowed after the heavy downpour on Wednesday evening.
Due to overflowing of the reservoir, the water is slowly moving towards different schemes from Sameera Chowk. One track of the road from Sameera Chowk leading to Al-Azhar Garden has been shut down for traffic.
Many vehicles have also stuck due to flooding and the residents fear it would soon enter their homes.
Due to the continuous rainfall, traffic on Korangi Causeway remained suspended for the fifth day while other main arteries also experienced massive traffic back-ups on Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, K-Electric spokesperson Imran Rana said the temporary disruption in power supply was due to the accumulation of water in low-lying areas of the city.
“Electric staff is constantly monitoring the changing weather conditions,” he said, adding that citizens can contact 118 in case of any emergency.
The city could receive more rains till August 18 under an approaching new monsoon system though the persisting low-pressure area over the North Arabian Sea has become less intense.More monsoon rains could also lash Shaheed Benazirabad, Naushehro Feroze, Sukkur, Larkana, Ghotki, Kashmore, Shikarpur, Dadu, Jamshoro, Qambar Shahdadkot, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad, Matiari, Thatta, Sujawal and Sanghar districts.
Meanwhile at least one man was killed in Karachi on Tuesday in rain-related incident.
According to police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed, Abid, 40, was electrocuted in Sector 4-D of Orangi Town. His body was moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
