Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday launched a subsidized, interest-free electric bike (e-bike) scheme aimed at government employees up to BPS-16, in a move to promote clean transportation and reduce the country’s reliance on fuel imports.

The initiative, introduced under the Pakistan Accelerated Vehicle Electrification (PAVE) Program 2025, offers interest-free loans of up to Rs200,000 for the purchase of e-bikes, along with a subsidy of up to Rs50,000 per unit.

Beneficiaries will be able to repay the remaining amount over a two-year period through affordable monthly instalments ranging between approximately Rs6,250 and Rs8,333.

The scheme is part of the government’s broader push to transition towards electric mobility, with a target of shifting 30 per cent of vehicles to electric power within the next five years.

Officials informed the prime minister that such a transition could potentially save around $4.5 billion in fuel imports.

During the briefing, it was also shared that Pakistan’s EV sector is gaining momentum, with 72 manufacturing certificates issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, and four for electric cars so far.
