Google Maps has received an exciting AI feature with the introduction of a Gemini-powered, hands-free conversational driving experience. The new update brings Google’s advanced AI capabilities directly into the Maps app, offering drivers a more intuitive and seamless way to get information while on the road.
The new tool allows users to ask for help without touching their device, making it easier to find stops along a route, check the availability of EV chargers, and share arrival times with friends.
According to Google, the goal is to create a companion-like assistant that provides real-time, context-aware guidance.
Drivers can now request complex, multi-step information in a single conversation. For example, users can ask for “a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options within a couple miles” and immediately follow up with questions about parking before confirming, “OK, let’s go there.”
The assistant can also handle unrelated tasks, such as adding a calendar event for an upcoming appointment.
In addition to the hands-free features, Google is rolling out proactive traffic alerts. The app will now notify users of major slowdowns, closures, or other disruptions even when they aren’t actively navigating. These alerts are beginning to launch in the U.S. on Android.
