KARACHI: A gang of four armed robbers has looted one million cash from a local bank in the New Karachi area of the metropolis on Wednesday.
According to sources, the armed robbers entered a branch of a bank at the New Do-Minute Chowrangi of the metropolis and made security guards and the bank staff hostage. Sources disclosed during the robbery the robbers injured two security guards with rifle blows when they resisted.
According to the bank manager, the criminals entered the bank in daylight and looted over 11, 35,000 rupees cash and fled from the scene. Soon after the incident, area police officers and rangers reached the scene and asked for the details of the incident.
The rangers and police officials also summoned the crime scene unit of the department to the bank. Meanwhile, the Sindh Police chief has taken notice of the bank robbery incident and sought a detailed inquiry report from the DIG Police West district and the DIG CIA.
In CCTV footage of the incident, the robbers could be seen firing with weapons and fleeing from the scene after the crime. Earlier, police had claimed to have arrested two robbers in injured condition after an encounter near Karachi’s Nipa flyover.
Sources said police officials engaged in an ‘exchange of fire’ with two alleged dacoits after the personnel tried to stop them while snap-checking in the area.
Sources further said the suspects opened fire as the police personnel asked them to stop for snap checking. Returning the fire, police said the two suspects sustained injuries and were later arrested.
The shootout transpired Karachi’s Nipa flyover where the personnel signaled two motorcycle riders who resisted and opened fire on the personnel. Police arrested the suspects and recovered weapons, cash and a motorbike from their custody.
