ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday accepted the appeal of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah against the fine imposed on him on the charge of violating the election code of conduct, however, rejected the plea of former prime minister and PTI chairman Imran Khan in the same case.
According to the ECP code of conduct, the public office-holders including president, prime minister, chairman/deputy chairman senate, speaker/deputy speaker of an assembly, federal ministers, ministers of state, governors, chief ministers, provincial ministers, and advisers to the prime minister and the chief minister, mayor/chairman/Nazim, their deputies, cannot participate in the by-polls campaigns.
The electoral watchdog had slapped a fine of Rs50,000 on Imran Khan for violating the code of conduct during by-polls in Peshawar. The same was challenged by the PTI Chief on which the ECP announced its verdict today, upholding the fine, saying the appeal was time-barred as Imran Khan should have challenged the verdict within 3 days.
On the other hand, the ECP accepted the appeal of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah against the fine imposed on him on the charge of violating the election code of conduct in Faisalabad.
A four-member ECP bench, headed by Nisar Durrani, pronounced the reserved verdict, removing Rs10,000 of fine on Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah.
