ISLAMMBAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has served notices to Prime Minister Imran Khan and others for allegedly violating the code of conduct ahead of local government (LG) elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The election commission has served notices to PM Imran Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman, Chief Minister Mahmood Khan and other federal minister for attending a public gathering in Lower Dir ahead of LG polls.
The commission has summoned the prime minister on March 14. The notice was issued by the district monitoring officer. KP governor and chief minister have also been issued notices by the ECP.
The election commission also issued notices to Speaker National Assembly (NA) Asad Qaiser, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, federal ministers Murad Saeed, Pervez Khattak and provincial minister Anwar Zeb Khan for visiting Lower Dir to attend the public gathering. The second phase of KP LG polls will be held in the province on March 31.
Earlier in the day, the ECP had restrained PM Imran Khan from visiting Lower Dir in view of the forthcoming polls. The election monitoring body issued a statement, barring the premier from holding a public gathering rally in Lower Dir.
It added the president, prime minister, lawmakers and governors cannot visit the area after the announcement of the election schedule. The ECP has warned of legal action in case of any violation of its code of conduct under Sections 233 and 234 of the Election Act of Pakistan.
