ATHENS: At least 100 people, including several Pakistanis, have died after a migrant boat sank in Greece.
According to the details, there were more than 400 illegal immigrants on board the boat that sank near Kalamata, who were going from Libya to Italy, when a terrible accident occurred during the journey at sea.
The foreign news agency said that most of the people on board the boat were Pakistanis, besides citizens of Afghanistan, Syria, and Egypt who were traveling illegally to Italy. More than 100 people have been rescued.
A state of emergency has been imposed in the affected area. The search for hundreds of missing migrants is still ongoing. Officials said that the missing persons have been drowning for a long time and the death toll is expected to rise.
Military planes, helicopters, and 6 boats are participating in the operation to search for drowning migrants. None of the victims of the accident in the Ionian Sea were seen wearing life jackets.
Due to not wearing a life jacket, there is a fear of increasing the number of deaths. The Greek government has begun the process of identifying the rescued migrants. Actions will be taken to deport illegal immigrants to their home countries.
