Sindh Governor Nehal Hashmi has sparked controversy after his remarks about music and dancing at an Independence Day event at the University of Karachi.
Hashmi attended the university’s “Azadi Fiesta” on August 13, where students and performers were celebrating Independence Day with music and traditional instruments, including the tabla.
During his address, the governor questioned the presence of dancing and music at the event and was heard asking, “Did the Mirasis create Pakistan?”
He also questioned whether Pakistan was achieved through dancing and suggested that the occasion should instead focus on remembering historical figures associated with the country’s creation and institutions.

His use of the term “Mirasi”, a label historically associated with hereditary musicians and performers, triggered a backlash online, with critics accusing the governor of making a classist remark and disrespecting cultural performers.
The controversy intensified after videos circulated on social media purportedly showing Hashmi later participating in Independence Day celebrations at the Governor House, where patriotic music was being played and people were dancing.
The contrasting scenes prompted further criticism, with social media users questioning the governor’s objections to music and dancing at the university event while appearing to celebrate in a similar setting later.
