It’s been a month since Israel has unleashed the most barbaric genocidal campaign against 2.3 million defenseless Palestinians trapped in what international human rights organizations describe as the world’s largest concentration camp. Calls for a ceasefire in Gaza are intensifying as the traumatic pictures coming out of Gaza continue to unsettle our collective conscience.
The news coming out of beleaguered Gaza has increasingly been grim every day for the past four weeks. Pick-up trucks filled with bodies, children being extracted from the debris, residential districts flattened.
In a joint statement on Monday, heads of the various U.N. agencies called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, saying “enough is enough, this must stop now. An entire population is besieged and under attack, denied access to the essentials for survival, bombed in their homes, shelters, hospitals and places of worship. This is unacceptable.”
Israel’s bombing of the already impoverished enclave has killed over 9,500 Palestinians, including at least 3,750 children and over 2,325 women in just 30 days, in addition to months of deadly raids in the occupied West Bank. Israel has also imposed a “total siege” on civilians in Gaza, banning the entry of fuel and food as well as goods essential for survival – a move banned under international law.
The cry for Gaza ceasefire is not only a demand for an end to the bloodshed, but also a plea for justice, dignity, and peace for the Palestinian people, who have been living under a brutal occupation and siege for decades.
It is also a call for Israel to respect the human rights and security of its own citizens and neighbors, and to abide by the international law and resolutions that recognize the legitimate rights and aspirations of both peoples. Only a just and comprehensive solution that addresses the root causes of the conflict can ensure a lasting ceasefire and a sustainable peace in the region.
