LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed relevant authorities to submit a comprehensive, foolproof plan within five days to ensure the provision of clean drinking water across the entire province.
The directive was issued during a high-level meeting of the Punjab Clean Water Authority (PCWA), chaired by the Chief Minister in Lahore.
To ensure seamless execution, the meeting finalized plans to restructure and upgrade the Punjab Clean Water Authority on modern lines, mirroring the framework of the ‘Clean Punjab’ initiative.
The authority will be granted full technical and administrative autonomy, alongside modern transport fleets, advanced technology, and dedicated human resources.
Besides this, in order to maintain transparency and operational efficiency, all authority trucks and water plants will undergo strict digital monitoring. Key measures introduced include:
– Identification Protocols: Every filtration and Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant across the province will prominently display its unique Plant ID, operator name, contact number, and operational hours.
– Tailored Technology: RO plants and modern filtration systems will be installed based on specific regional water requirements.
– Global Expertise: The province will engage an international consultancy firm and adopt cutting-edge Japanese and Chinese filtration technologies to elevate water quality standards.
Immediate Relief and Infrastructure Repairs
During the briefing, officials highlighted ongoing efforts to deliver immediate relief to off-grid communities.
Mobile bottling plants are already operational in remote areas, currently benefiting over 2,400 families daily.
To expand this footprint, the Chief Minister instructed the immediate repair and maintenance of all 5,734 existing water filtration plants across Punjab, alongside orders to install new facilities where needed.
Furthermore, the PCWA’s operational mandate will be expanded to encompass every district and tehsil in the province.
Underscoring her administration’s commitment to basic public utility access, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reaffirmed that clean water access remains a top priority alongside major developmental projects.
