NEW YORK: China has blocked a proposal, jointly put forward by India and the United States at the United Nations to list an individual named Shahid Mahmood as a global terrorist. This is reported to be the fourth instance in as many months that Beijing has blocked bids to blacklist individuals deemed as terrorists by India and the United States.
According to details gathered by MM News, China placed a hold on the proposal by India and the United States to designate Mahmood as a global terrorist under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council.
It may be recalled that the US Treasury Department had. in 2016, designated two individuals Shahid Mahmood and Muhammad Sarwar as global terrorists for their alleged links with banned outfit LeT.
Shahid Mahmood is reported to be the Pakistan-based deputy chief of Falah-i-lnsaniyat Foundation (FIF), which was banned by the federal government.
On 21 February 2019, the National Security Committee (NSC) decided to proscribe Jamat ud Dawa (JuD) and Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) under Schedule I of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. A formal proscription order was issued by the Ministry of Interior on 6 June 2019.
