DUBAI: Iran has supplied sea-launched ballistic missile Ghadr to Yemen’s Houthis, British news agency Reuters reported on Wednesday citing Iran’s Tasnim news agency.
Tasnim, a news agency believed to be affiliated with Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, reported that Iran’s sea-launched ballistic missile, named Ghadr, is now available to Yemen’s Houthi fighters.
“The missile… has become a weapon capable of presenting serious challenges to the interests of the United States and its main ally in the region, the Zionist regime,” stated Tasnim.
Iran’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Although Iran supports the Houthis, it has repeatedly denied arming the group.
The Houthis have been attacking shipping lanes in and around the Red Sea to demonstrate their support for Palestinians in the Gaza conflict, affecting a critical trade route. In early May, the leader of Yemen’s Houthis, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, announced that the group would target ships associated with supplying or transporting goods to Israel, regardless of their destination. He described this as the fourth stage of escalation in response to “the Israeli aggression on Rafah” in southern Gaza.
“From now on, we are also thinking about the fifth stage and the sixth stage, and we have very important, sensitive, and influential choices for the enemies,” he added.
