KARACHI: A five-storey dilapidated building collapsed in Liaquatabad area on Tuesday night.
There were no causualties or injuries reported as the building was evacuated a day earlier. Police said the building was declared dangerous and had been cleared to avoid loss of lives.
Rescue teams rushed to the site as Rangers and police cordoned off the area to restrict any movement to the collapsed building. The debris of the collapsed building damaged two neighbouring residential structures.
The building was located in Liaquatabad N0. 5 near Sindhi Hotel. Several adjacent buildings were also evacuated after being affected by the collapse.
The collapse created chaos and panic in the area as people gathered in large numbers. The residents of the building have demanded to arrest of the builder.
The five-storey structure was constructed on 60 square yards land and had been declared dangerous by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA).
SBCA Demolition director Rehan Khan reached the site of the incident and controlled the situation. He said the building had started leaning after which it was evacuated.
PTI MNA Aslam Khan visited the site and accused the SBCA and builder mafia responsible for the incident. He said they will help those who lost their homes in the collapse.
This is not the first incident of a building collapse in Karachi. On 7th June, a building collapsed in the Lyari’s Kalri area, claiming the lives of at least eleven people and injuring several others.
