In a significant policy reversal, the Government of Pakistan has reportedly decided to permanently shut down its national internet firewall project.

The decision comes after the multi-billion rupee system, originally introduced in 2024 to regulate social media and monitor digital content, was deemed a technical and operational failure.

Technical Failures and Digital Disruptions
Senior officials have acknowledged that the system failed to meet its objectives, instead triggering widespread instability across the country’s digital landscape. Key issues cited include:

The firewall failed to integrate smoothly with the national internet backbone and local service providers.

Officials pointed to a lack of adequate technical groundwork prior to the system’s deployment.

Industry stakeholders confirmed a noticeable decline in internet speeds once the firewall became operational.

IT Sector and Freelancers Hit
The filtering system’s poor performance had a direct impact on Pakistan’s digital economy. The disruptions hit several key sectors:

IT firms, software houses, and e-commerce platforms reported frequent service interruptions.

Pakistan’s freelance community faced significant hurdles, including difficulties uploading large files and attending virtual meetings, leading to missed deadlines and financial setbacks.

Clearing the Path for 5G
The decision to scrap the project is heavily influenced by the upcoming 5G spectrum auction. Telecom experts warned the government that a malfunctioning firewall would be incompatible with the high-speed, low-latency requirements of 5G technology.

International telecom operators expressed concerns over network reliability.

Future technology partners might be discouraged from participating in the bidding process if connectivity remains compromised.
