Amid the ongoing monsoon, the Hyderabad division administration has imposed a 30-day ban on swimming and bathing in the Indus River and other open water bodies following a series of drowning incidents that have claimed more than a dozen lives in recent days.
The restriction was imposed by Hyderabad Division Commissioner Fayaz Hussain Abbasi under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) as a preventive measure to avert further loss of life during the high-risk season.
The ban covers swimming and bathing at picnic points and along the banks of the Indus River, as well as in canals, distributaries, nullahs, ponds and lakes across the division.
The administration took the decision after a series of back-to-back drowning incidents involving youths and children raised concerns over public safety at open water sites.
Under the order, citizens have been directed to stay away from all designated water bodies and refrain from swimming or bathing at such locations.
The administration has also urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on children and prevent them from approaching rivers, canals, ponds and other potentially dangerous water bodies.
