ISLAMABAD: The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) received another setback on Wednesday, as disgruntled faction Aleem Khan group has refused to support Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Pervaiz Elahi for the Punjab Chief Minister slot.
Disgruntled group’s spokesperson, Khalid Mahmood, said that for four long years a “dishonest and incompetent” person was forced upon Punjab – an apparent reference to Usman Buzdar and now Pervez Elahi has been nominated.
“Every committed worker of the PTI objects to Elahi’s nomination,” he said. The spokesperson said if Pervaiz Elahi was to bring about a Naya (new) Pakistan, how do you justify the existence of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
The spokesperson further said that the Aleem Khan group would not enter any wheelie-dealie and support the opposition candidate unconditionally.
Maqbool added that Jahangir Khan Tareen, who heads another disgruntled group within the party, has made a lot of sacrifices for the party and the group was praying for his recuperation.
On Monday, PML-Q had finally put its weight behind the embattled prime minister in exchange for PM Imran conceding Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as PTI’s candidate for Punjab chief minister after incumbent Usman Buzdar presented his resignation to the premier.
The PML-Q is also a critical ally of the PTI government in Punjab and Centre, with 10 and five seats, respectively. The Chaudhrys support to PM Imran was being seen as a revival of his hopes to save his government.
Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) coordination committee announced on Wednesday that it had ratified the agreement between the party and the opposition on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan.
MQM-P leader Nasreen Jalil confirmed the development while speaking to the media outside the party’s markaz in Karachi’s Bahadurabad.
“Details of the agreement will be revealed in a press conference at 4pm,” she said. In that press conference, the party is expected to formally make public its split with the government and announce voting in favour of the no-trust resolution against PM Imran.
MQM-P leaders Farogh Naseem and Aminul Haque resigned earlier today as ministers for law and justice, and information technology and telecom, respectively.
