Islamabad: Akbar S. Babar has announced to challenge the intra-party elections of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) once again.
Speaking to a private news channel on Monday, Akbar S. Babar stated that he would challenge the intra-party elections in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) tomorrow, denouncing the latest intra-party election as a dark chapter in history for those advocating transparent elections.
He pointed out that only 940 out of 850,000 PTI members participated in the recent intra-party elections, constituting a mere 0.11% of the total membership. “How can we accept this as a valid representation in the name of intra-party elections?” he questioned.
It is noteworthy that yesterday, the Chief Election Commissioner of PTI, Rauf Hassan, announced the results of the intra-party election. During the press conference in Islamabad, Rauf Hassan revealed that Barrister Gohar Ali Khan had been elected as the chairman and Umar Ayub as the secretary-general in the intra-party election.
Rauf Hassan mentioned an agreement with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), stating that the parliamentary party would rejoin the PTI once the election symbol was returned.
In December 2023, Babar had previously challenged the intra-party elections of PTI in the ECP, leading to the ECP declaring those elections null and void. The ECP’s decision resulted in the PTI losing its electoral symbol, and all party candidates contesting the general elections, held last month, as independent candidates.
Babar, asserting his status as a founding member of PTI, intends to run for the chairmanship in the intra-party elections, but PTI disputes his membership status within the party.
