Aga Khan V – The Value of Learning and Human Advancement

Ambassador Dr. Jamil by Ambassador Dr. Jamil
March 27, 2025

Learning stands as a pillar of human growth, sparking creativity, unity, and mental expansion. It strengthens communities by enabling the steady flow of wisdom between generations, cultivating a drive for improvement.

Since the earliest and ancient societies, people have revered their education as a divine blessing from Allah Almighty. Yet, today’s world brings unique obstacles of the 21st century, heightening the need for modern education like never before. In a time marked by swift leaps in artificial intelligence and pioneering discoveries by humanity, its role in molding our existence remains vital.

From the creation of the printing press to the rise of digital networks, education has fueled extraordinary progress across countless fields. It has cleared paths for major strides in science and medicine, lifting human thought to remarkable levels. Disciplines like cutting-edge technology, construction sciences, and mathematics showcase stunning successes, revealing the limitless scope of human imagination.

Education has long anchored societal evolution in different regions of the world, supporting the rise of cultures from ancient times to the present history. However, with artificial intelligence emerging, its remarkable importance has grown dramatically. Communities that don’t adjust face the danger of falling behind in the unyielding tide of worldwide advancement of the current century.

More than just realizing dreams, education arms people with the means to tackle today’s intricate challenges. While some dread the disruptive power of new inventions, others—such as nations like Pakistan, still developing—have started to welcome these shifts, even with restricted access to top-tier learning.

Among the astonishing inventions of the present era are 3D printing, social media, multi-use rockets, capsule endoscopy, nano robots, e-readers, smartphones, renewable energy technology, artificial intelligence, gene editing, blockchain technology, virtual reality, and drones.

Sadly, in Pakistan, tapping into these innovations feels out of reach for most, with only a handful equipped to unlock their potential. In our current age, education is more essential than ever, as was earlier predicted by intellectuals, forming the groundwork for triumph in every arena. It feeds human capacity, boosting the progress of humanity in areas from commerce and wellness to research and design, as well as arts and crafts. Beyond sharing facts, it hones practical abilities, securing success for individuals, empowering their societies, and uplifting society overall.

Furthermore, education goes past simply gathering information; it sharpens analytical thinking, creative problem-solving, and the ability to connect with others—skills critical in today’s swift, linked world. Amid constant change and complexity, flexibility and ingenuity are now must-haves for global strides.

The deeper aim of education stretches beyond personal wins; it sparks widespread societal shifts. It seeks to forge a fair, balanced world where everyone gains a chance to flourish. By pouring resources into learning, countries can pave the way for thriving, lasting futures for those to come. As nations push forward in education, they open fresh horizons of intellectual and scientific growth, enhancing humanity’s collective well-being.

Prince Rahim Aga Khan has been a key figure in uplifting overlooked groups, especially in learning, health, building design, cultural preservation, and economic growth. Under his direction, Aga Khan V has launched game-changing efforts, raising these fields to new peaks.

Aga Khan’s Learning Programs

In an era of scientific marvels, artificial intelligence, and technological wonders, education remains the gateway to gaining and applying knowledge effectively. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) has taken the responsibility of setting up a wide range of learning hubs globally, from early childhood centers educating minors to higher education institutes, with deep roots in populous continents like Asia and Africa.

For a long time, the AKDN has worked hard, making steady, meaningful upgrades to education, viewing it as a key to uplift entire communities in different countries of the world. With Prince Rahim Aga Khan’s guidance, the AKDN and its offshoots have very efficiently stretched their efforts far and wide, bringing solid learning opportunities to minors, children, and teens in forgotten regions of the world. Inaugurated in 1905 by Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III, the Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) stands out as a bright light, which brings hope, motivating students all over the globe.

AKES reaches thousands through its web of schools, dormitories, and casual learning setups. These centers by AKES are placed in spots where education is considered rare, like Mandera (India), Gwadar (Pakistan), and Zanzibar (Tanzania). Today, AKES is active across regions like East Africa, South Asia, and Central Asia, training teachers in top methods of education, helping them to make progress. Each location provides a broad, welcoming curriculum, shaping individuals who care about their communities and the planet, ready to spark positive shifts. Alumni from these schools play big roles in improving life locally.

A standout trait of AKES is its focus on local ties, with 99% of its team hailing from the areas they serve. Over half the teachers are women, showing a strong push for equal representation. All buildings are crafted to boost teaching, safety, health, and eco-friendliness, using nearby materials to support local economies.

According to AKES, its Early Childhood Development (ECD) and pre-primary programs focus on preparing teachers to create safe, uplifting environments for little ones. Running 259 centers that educate more than 16,500 children—mainly in the countryside of Pakistan and Afghanistan—AKES fills a critical gap where early schooling is hard to come by. These schools are tied to both local and international testing bodies, such as the Aga Khan University Examination Board, ensuring top-notch quality stays consistent.

Beyond traditional lessons, AKES weaves in modern skills like robotics and programming. It also stresses community involvement, giving students hands-on experiences outside class. These steps build abilities that go past grades, fostering duty and a tie to societal growth.

AKES’ learning hubs also offer informal courses, like globally valued ICT and English training, boosting job and college prospects for adults. This all-around approach ensures graduates shine academically while carrying values that shape a forward-thinking society.

The goal of AKES schools isn’t just job prep; they aim to mold active, thoughtful citizens dedicated to constant growth. In today’s rapid world, setting clear aims, working with varied groups, and crafting fresh answers are key. These schools plant a sense of direction in students, building toughness to face hurdles and adapt to a changing world.

As the saying goes, “Hope keeps the world turning.” Hope fuels drive and grit in both learning and life, cementing the idea that hard work pays off despite setbacks. When students embrace this, they gain the will to push through studies, tackle obstacles, and stay upbeat about learning. This outlook boosts their odds of success and supports mental strength.

In tough moments, hopeful people can handle stress and setbacks, seeing challenges as hidden chances. This positivity spurs them to chase big goals and strive to reach them. Aga Khan Education Services’ schools span the globe, touching Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Tajikistan, Tanzania, the UAE, Uganda, and Kyrgyzstan. Daily, they light the way for eager learners and bold thinkers ready to shape a brighter tomorrow.
