TEHRAN: Iran today (Monday) has issued an arrest warrant for the United States President Donald Trump over the killing of its top commander Qasem Soleimani and asked Interpol for help, the country’s semi-official news agency reported.
According to Iran’s news agency, Tehran prosecutor Ali Alqasimehr said on Monday that Trump, along with more than 30 others Iran accuses of involvement in the January 3 attack, face murder, and terrorism charges.
However, the Tehran prosecutor did not identify anyone else sought other than Trump but stressed Iran would continue to pursue his prosecution even after his presidency ends.
Ali Alqaismehr further said that Iran had asked Interpol to issue a “red notice” for Trump and the other individuals the Islamic Republic accuses of taking part in the killing of Soleimani.
Under a red notice, local authorities make the arrests on behalf of the country that requested it. However, the notices cannot force countries to arrest or extradite suspects but can put government leaders on the spot and limit suspects’ travel.
Earlier in January, the United States killed General Soleimani, leader of the Revolutionary Guard Corps’s expeditionary Quds Force, with a drone strike near Baghdad International Airport.
The Trump administration labeled Soleimani a ‘terrorist’, and Washington deemed him responsible for the deaths of hundreds of U.S. troops in Iraq.
