LANDI KOTAL: Pakistan and Afghanistan have opened the Torkham border on a trial basis kicking off 24-hour trade activities and transportation services.
Prime Minister Imran Khan will formally open the crossing on 5th September. The district administration finalised arrangements for the arrival of the prime minister at the Torkham border today.
Pak-Afghan security officials previously discussed keeping the Torkham border open.
The plan to keep the border open 24 hours will accelerate free Afghan trade, transportation, and bilateral relations.
The cross-border movement of citizens from the two sides will be started in the second phase. By then, round-the-clock trade activities will take place on a permanent basis.
Meanwhile, it has been decided that all government officials and customs officers would perform their duties in two shifts.
Previously in January, Prime Minister Khan had ordered the officials concerned to make arrangements within six months for keeping the Torkham border crossing to Afghanistan open 24 hours a day.
