A convoy of former Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) prime minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas reportedly came under attack in the Tain-Dhalkot area, leaving one security guard dead and several others injured.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Azad Kashmir Raja Akmal, while citing information provided by Ilyas’ spokesperson, confirmed that one of the former premier’s guards was killed in the firing, while multiple others sustained injuries.
The DIG said authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible for violating the law.
According to a statement shared by Ilyas’ spokesperson on Facebook, the firing occurred in the Tain-Dhalkot area, where security guard Muhammad Asif lost his life. Several other people travelling with the convoy were also injured in the attack.
The spokesperson said Tanveer Ilyas had left Islamabad earlier in the day for a two-day visit to Rawalakot when the incident took place.
The attack comes ahead of the July 27 elections for AJK’s 53-member Legislative Assembly, adding to concerns over security during the election period.
Earlier, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas formally left the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and joined the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).
