US-led sting blows lid off jailed Indian gangster’s global crime empire

WASHINGTON: A sweeping international law enforcement operation led by the United States has dismantled an India-based transnational organized crime network, resulting in federal charges against 37 individuals and the arrest of 24 suspects across North America and Europe, federal authorities announced.

The multi-year crackdown, code-named Operation Hard Ball, exposed a sophisticated syndicate directed by Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious 33-year-old gangster currently imprisoned in India.

According to a nine-count indictment unsealed by the U.S. Justice Department, Bishnoi utilized smuggled contraband cellphones and voice-over-internet devices from his prison cell to manage day-to-day criminal operations across multiple continents.

U.S. prosecutors stated that Bishnoi cultivated a deceptive public persona as a nationalist, patriot, and deeply religious figure via social media to recruit operatives into his enterprise.

In reality, authorities allege his syndicate orchestrated murder-for-hire plots, political assassinations, extortions, and large-scale narcotics trafficking, specifically targeting the global Indian diaspora to cultivate a culture of fear.

The coordinated operation by the FBI, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and European law enforcement agencies yielded the seizure of approximately 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, one kilogram of heroin, firearms, and cash.

Law enforcement officials are actively searching for 10 remaining fugitives connected to the syndicate.

Among the central allegations in the indictment is the direct involvement of the Bishnoi enterprise in the June 2023 assassination of pro-Khalistan Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a temple in Surrey, British Columbia. Federal prosecutors have formally charged Bishnoi and his fugitive lieutenant, Satinderjeet Singh, also known as Goldy Brar, with ordering the high-profile hit.

The unsealed charges provide a fresh dimension to the geopolitical friction surrounding Nijjar’s death, which previously triggered a severe diplomatic dispute when Canadian officials suggested a potential link to Indian government agents.

However, U.S. indictments and subsequent statements from Canadian law enforcement clarified that the Operation Hard Ball investigation found no evidence connecting New Delhi officials to the assassination.

Senior Canadian police officials stated that the extensive probe treats the network strictly as an independent transnational organized crime group rather than an entity backed by the state, noting that the Indian government provided cooperation during the investigation.

New Delhi has consistently maintained its denial of any involvement in the killing.

The fallout from the international investigation has also prompted local accountability measures within India.

Authorities in East Punjab confirmed that a local police inspector, identified as Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, has been removed from active duty pending an official inquiry into his alleged links to an extortion scheme exposed by Western investigators.

U.S. Attorney representatives stated that transnational criminal organizations exploiting communities through ruthless violence would face the full force of federal justice, emphasizing that Western nations would offer no safe harbor for international syndicates attempting to operate within their borders.
